Abstract

Satellite Earth-Observation (EO) allowed the assessment of Glacial Lakes Outburst Flood (GLOF) hazard for the largest lake (Wa-007) in the Thangothang Chhu glacier catchment, Chomolhari area, Bhutan, performed within the ESA/WB collaboration on EO in the Himalayas (SCAPOZZA 2016). The GLOF hazard assessment was performed based on the checklist for glacier lake hazard assessments (FREY et al. 2015) provided by ESA’s S:GLA:MO project. Chomolhari area is located in north-western Bhutan, in the Thimphu District, and a few kilometres north of the village of Jangothang. Chomolhari (7,326 m a.s.l.) is the second highest peak in Bhutan, lying on the western border with Tibet.
