Abstract
This volume reports the limnological data collected on Lake Lugano during 2008 by the Institute of Earth Sciences (IST) of the University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), in the frame of the research program promoted since 1978 by the Commissione Internazionale per la Protezione delle Acque Italo-Svizzere. Considering the results obtained in 2008 it can be affirmed that, notwithstanding the observed improvement, Lake Lugano is still in a state of high eutrophy, the highest among Swiss lakes, with nutrient concentrations in progressive and steady development. In this delicate phase of the recovery process it is essential to evaluate all further measures to reduce the residual external load, strictly monitoring the limnological trend of the lake ecosystem. The observed destratification of the northern basin occurred in winter 2004-2005 and its following complete mixing represent two important steps toward the complete recovery of Lake Lugano, on account of their effects on oxygenation state and phosphorus concentration in deep hypolimnion.
