Abstract
This research is based on an investigation carried out on 73 primary school teachers (41 from Ticino, Switzerland, and 32 from Piemonte, Italy) to evaluate their convictions regarding division and the sets on which such operation can be defined. From the results it comes out in many cases the lack of an aware knowledge of this topic along with misconceptions and incorrect and inconsistent intuitive models that influence the didactic transposition. The origins of difficulties in the learning of division on the part of students could therefore depend not only on epistemological obstacle but also on didactic ones.
