Abstract

Are there any genuine political dilemmas? This question should be answered by examining some conflicts of values that have already been widely discussed in the past or that have emerged more recently in the philosophical discussion: freedom or equality, redistribution or recognition, collective decisions or justified choices; nationalism or cosmopolitanism. I will discuss in particular the recent papers by E. Biale, V. Ottonelli and C. Testino , all of which summarize the salient aspects of each question. The brief analysis that I propose leads to the conclusion that in all these cases, rather than genuine political dilemmas, we should speak of conflict of values, which a normative theory should be able to solve.
