Abstract
This article aims a contribution to the reflection on the role played by the introduction of socially acute questions in geography teaching. This questioning is part of the research on the function of the “education for…”, and on the role of the introduction of controversial issues in teaching sequences. This instrument sets pupils in the condition of establishing choices with the aim of taking position on a given controversial situation. This involves considering the spatial dimension of the controversy and to examine the different issues of the possible choices. This requires the mobilization of the tools of critical thinking and of those of spatial thinking, both essential for a dynamic citizenship, conceived as always in evolution and depending on choices. The analysis of the collected data shows the potential of this instrument in this field. It also permits to understand the importance of a geography teaching encouraging critical judgments.
