In this article, we would like to briefly examine “connective words” definition considering grammar history, grammaticography and the role of text linguistics. Particular emphasis is given to the functional aspect: the only way to overcome the intrinsic complexity of the category and of its definition, especially in a didactic perspective. After some short remarks on real students’ written compositions, we propose some inductive didactic paths accompanied by concrete examples, designed considering the Karmiloff-Smith’s Representational Redescription Model as a strategy to reach and develop metalinguistic ability.
