Abstract
THE ‘TRANSPARENT PAINTINGS’ OF THE HOLY WEEK IN MENDRISIO, BETWEEN USE AND CONSERVATION In the Swiss town of Mendrisio (Canton Ticino) for the Holy Week celebrations, oil painted transparent structures illuminated from within are exposed on the buildings façades and in the streets. The oldest surviving examples of these Trasparenti date back to the end of the 18th century, but tradition is still alive and new Trasparenti still continue to be manufactured. This article intends to focus on the complex question concerning the restoration, conserva- tion and outdoor use of these particular artefacts, in order to preserve them and keep the tradition alive.
