Abstract

Formal home-care has spread out increasingly in the West. Sooner or later, it can represent one of the conditions for the elderly to stay home: but what about the elders’agency when they are facing losses proper to great age and have to ask for unfamiliar services and persons in their home’s intimacy ? Interviews were conducted with elders aged 80 and over, living in a region of Switzerland ; they showed that the persons’role on this matter, even if jeopardized by some constraints, is far from marginal. Its understanding implies to consider his life course, his resources, as well as the contexts he is involved in. The types of services – domestic help, or care, private or public aid – also have an influence, along with the organization process and the caregivers’work.
