Abstract

Aeromonas species are ubiquitous in most aquatic environments. They are associated to fish diseases and are also relevant as human pathogens. Over the years there was an increase of Aeromonas isolates resistant to antimicrobial agents, both of clinical and environmental origins. The resistances could be horizontally transferred to other bacteria of same or different species and genera. In the aquatic environment Aeromonas spp. could play a role as “reservoir” and/or as “vector” of resistance genes. To be transferred, resistance genes, have to be located on mobile DNA elements such as integrons, transposons and plasmids. Tn21 is the most common transposon involved in the global dissemination of antibiotic resistance determinants among bacteria. We have determined by PCR on the target gene tnpA the presence of transposon Tn21 among 250 Aeromonas strains with different resistance and plasmidic profiles isolated from various aquatic environments. Preliminary results show that Aeromonas spp. can carry the Tn21. This transposon can be located on plasmids and/or on chromosome and therefore can contribute to the horizontal gene transfer of resistance determinants also in Aeromonas strains.
