Abstract
This contribution addresses the ambiguous nature of fiction on the backdrop of the philosophical debate on this notion. The debate on fiction began with the birth of philosophy and found in Plato and Aristotle the expression of the key positions to which later contributors referred back throughout the centuries. The present article then goes on to show the value and importance of fiction by considering the dangers of a manipulative use of it. Fiction is placed in an ambiguous territory between lie and disclosure. Some criteria, such as intentionality and transparency, are outlined for the definition of non-manipulative fiction with respect to lie. These criteria also allow for an evaluation of the correctness of the terminological labels currently applied with regards to different genres of television programs or feature films (e.g. Reality TV). Examples taken from different media - e-mail virus hoaxes, TV mockumentaries - show how the criterion of intentionality is necessary but not sufficient enough to deal with the variety of forms of fiction in our contemporary society. Keywords: distinction - approach, criterion of transparency, manipulation, disclosure - lie. * University
