Abstract

Professional social-healthcare operators in Ticino still have little understanding of occupational therapy, and the profession is usually associated more closely with physical rather than mental rehabilitation. The roots of occupational therapy, however, lie in the psychosocial sector, and more specifically between the 18th and 19th centuries, when, stimulated by the new ideas generated by the French Revolution, care providers accomplished a paradigmatic shift in terms of both attitudes and practice. For the first time, those affected by mental illnesses were granted values such as personal dignity, compassionate environments and personal action potential. Since that period this last value has been interpreted as a quality to integrate into the care-plan in order to develop real living prospects for those affected by mental illnesses. The aim of this text is to describe the history and the fundamental assumptions that have developed progressively around occupational therapy, focussing on its traditional and innovative potential which, at the same time, can constitute added value for the care provider team operating in today’s mental health sector.
