Abstract

This work presents a 2D and 3D imaging acquisition system that monitors the protective layer growth rate and the surface morphology of flame-retarded materials exposed to flames. The system minimizes the disturbances of the flames on the image sensors, thus gathering a video of the material’s surface. The apparatus consists of a 2D camera with customized lighting, a 3D scan and dedicated software acquiring images of the burning specimen. The 3D scan inspects some material surface features that are not visible with the 2D camera. As test bed for the system, flammability measurements following the UL94 standard were performed on phosphorous-containing flame retarded polyurethane composites; the obtained data have been correlated with the fire behaviour of the selected materials.
