Abstract

The objective was to design a new system of door to door waste sorting, which could improve the overall performance of the municipality of Borgo Val di Taro (PR), located in the Upper Valley of Taro at about 60 km from Parma. By analyzing the collection of municipal waste in the years 2006-2013 a new system of door to door waste sorting was designed. The municipality was divided in the urban area, called PAP (door to door) and the villages and the surrounding houses, called PROX (proximity). Collection of paper, glass-plastic-tins, organic, unsorted are planned in both the areas. The PROX area will continue to be organized through the system of collection for recyclable waste, there only paper, glass-plastic-tins and unsorted will be collected. We carried out the economic cost-benefit analysis, using indicators such as the Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return and Pay Back Time. Four different scenarios are analysed: two different companies with either one or two operators. It is considered a time horizon of 10 years to allow you to observe the return of the invested capital at the beginning of the service and the first positive margins and a discount rate of 4%, the sum of the Interest Rate Swap and 2% spread.
