Abstract

Intermittent renewable energies present a big challenge specifically in the reliability of the electric power grid operation. The increasing use of solar photovoltaic energy, among other renewables, in smart grids requires the need of precise day-to-day and hour-to-hour weather forecast to prevent both power failures and overloads and to manage the power share between the utilities. At the same time vendors need the most accurate meteorological and power production forecasts for critical decision making in energy trading. With the purpose of enhancing numerical weather prediction results through statistical post-processing based on real measurements, Ti- Swiss, a meteorological consulting company, and the Institute of Sustainability to the Built Environment of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI-ISAAC) have started sharing the results of their activity. In this work the authors compare the raw model and post-processed data with measurement data from the meteorological tower located at the SUPSI-ISAAC outdoor test centre, as a result of a 1-year data analysis that covers all seasonal variations in the environment under study.
