Abstract

The word “estimate” means «the result of a process (conscious or unconscious) that determines the unknown value of an amount or a quantity» (Pellegrino, 1999). What happens if this unknown value is infinite? There exits a “sense of infinity” just as there exits a “sense of number”? If the answer is positive, what shape does it assume? If the answer is negative, why? Is it possible to succeed in giving an intuitive sense of the difference between “countable infinity” and “continuous infinity”? In this research we answer these and other questions, analysing the behaviour of different kind of individuals, from adolescents to adults, from expert mathematicians to people of culture, but not in the specific sphere of mathematics. The research carried out in Colombia, Italy and Switzerland, offers a wide outline but with little prominent differences from country to country.
