Abstract

he purpose of the present work is to investigate the dynamic compressive behavior of as-received bearing steel, SAE 52100 at different strain rates (0.001s-1 - 3000s-1). Quasi-static tests of the material are conducted on universal testing machine, whereas, the experiments at high strain rates are performed on split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus. The mechanical properties are studied at different gauge lengths (4 mm, 8 mm and 12 mm) of the cylindrical specimen having diameter 8 mm. The material parameters of the existing Johnson-Cook model are determined and the applicability of the model for SAE 52100 bearing steel is examined.
