Abstract

In the context of the MARHVEL project, a prototype is implemented with the goal to understand potentials and issues of HoloLens 2 for the development of mixed reality applications in the vocational education field. The prototype aims to teach how to assemble a computer, by positioning different components on a computer motherboard. Some interesting findings are drawn both during the application development and in the initial user testing phase. The major challenges emerged during the development concern object detection, tracking and registration. The main issues are connected to the size of the objects to be manipulated, the environment lighting and the distance between the manipulated objects and the viewer’s eye. During the demonstration events, participants recognise some strengths of the prototype: they appreciate the engaging experience, the immersion feeling and the learning by doing approach.
