Abstract

Maintaining and improving motor and occupational performance among older persons with dementia and behavioural disorders, whether during normal care in the community, or following a hospitalisation, is important for their wellbeing, that of their caregivers, and their ability to continue to live in the community. Occupational therapy (OT) plays a key role in the maintenance of functional ability, but the fragmentation of care across settings and the absence of a shared treatment program among occupational therapists do not allow a significant increase in functional outcomes. The Tailor Activity Program (TAP) is an evidence-based OT program that has been shown to reduce behavioral symptoms and functional dependencies. In addition, the use of TAP in the hospital setting has been shown to promote discharge home.
