Abstract

From the outset of the pandemic, social distancing has been promoted by public health authorities to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Social distancing recommendations range from near complete isolation from social contacts outside the household to less restrictive variations such as keeping a distance of 1.5 meters and avoiding physical contact. These measures have changed daily social life, with implications for individual wellbeing, particularly among children, youth and older adults. Social contacts are fundamental to early development, and to a sense of purpose and feelings of connectedness in later life. Therefore, a clearer understanding of the associations between social distancing and psychological well-being is important, including the potential mechanisms that may explain or condition these associations, such as social circumstances, social support and perceived efficacy at maintaining non-physical contacts
