Abstract

This paper presents the definition, which is the most typical mathematical enunciation. We report some results of a research conducted in Canton Ticino with 440 pupils at the beginning of secondary school. This research shows the difficulties of pupils in conceiving, understanding and formulating the definition. This linguistic act is far from the most usual description and is not always the subject of specific and focused work by teachers.
