Abstract

The concept of citizenship is debated and under tension. It is indisputable that has a specific meaning of nexus between individuals and society and identifies the political, social, economic and cultural characteristics of such a nexus, which is substantiated in specific dimensions, affecting different theoretical aspects (coming from political and social studies) and practical aspects (legal and administrative). A pivotal role is played by the individual as main actor of this nexus. This is more true nowadays, since we live in a interdependent world, featured by increasing migration processes. Acquiring the capacity to be politically, socially, culturally and economically active member of our societies is therefore a fundamental component of being citizens, and in this sense citizenship education comes to the fore as a main concrete and appliable tool. Citizenship awareness, reached through citizenship education in schools and training is the main route for targeting members of society at risk of marginalization, such as migrants. This is more needful and true in city settings, since the city seems being the real forefront where the tensions in term of citizenship dimensions (such as participation, democratic conditions, social and political reformulation of rights and duties) and migration challenges are more vivid and urgent. In a global trend characterized by population growth and urbanization, putting the citizenship discourse as a milestone seems unavoidable, if we aim at improve our society giving value to the individual as member of a collectivity. In this direction, a concrete experience of research-action of citizenship education seems a fruitful example to be shared.
