Abstract

In the context of the complex course of events between the fifteenth and sixteenth century marking the consolidation of papal monarchy and the related conflict between the Sacred College of Cardinals and the pope, this contribution aims at presenting a new corpus of documents discovered in Roman archives regarding the biography of Cardinal Giovanni Antonio Sangiorgi of Piacenza, called Alessandrino. It contains correspondence regarding the letters from his city of origin, Milan, and from the cities where he had his principal ecclesiastical benefices, the bishoprics of Alessandria and Parma: unpublished material that is almost unique in this period for the reconstruction of events in the life of a member of the Sacred College. The Cardinal acquires a key role as counsellor to the newly elected Julius II, taking specific positions on issues relating to the convocation of an ecumenical council following what had been proposed by a group of cardinals opposing the Council (or Conciliabolo) of Pisa-Milan (1511-12). Conscious of the dignity of his role, he also presents himself as an attentive patron and promoter of a model of the cardinalate linked more to Christian than to pagan humanism. The correspondence is very useful, moreover, in understanding the family and client system of the Sangiorgi and the complex mechanism of assigning ecclesiastical benefices put in place between the courts of Rome and Milan.
