Abstract

Despite the role of Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) to the energy balance of buildings is increasingly recognized, the perception of barriers and constraints still hamper its diffusion of installations in the built environment. Since conventional PV is typically installed in optimal conditions, some limitations especially in existing urban areas (shading, non-optimal orientation, etc.) are still seen as a “no go” rather than as boundary conditions, which can be optimized through design and technical solutions. Such restrains include architectural, typological and construction aspects, both at urban and building level, along with economic/financial and legislative/normative issues. This paper will provide architects and planners with the definition of some current main constraints concerning PV integration at urban and building level and it will propose practical approaches (both technical and design) as reference to overcome these obstacles, contributing in a further step for a significant diffusion of BIPV in the built environment
